Stroke Information & Resource Guide -A stroke is not only serious but can be a life-threatening condition. Strokes are the fourth leading cause of death among Americans. Until recently, if you experienced a stroke, supportive care was all that was available. But now, stroke management has progressed to a point where a stroke can be stopped in its path.
Treatments available – prevent, limit disability and save lives. Success depends on time passed since symptoms appear. Early recognition - vital.
Stroke occurs when the supply of blood to the brain is either interrupted or reduced. The brain does not get enough oxygen or nutrients, causings brain cells to die.
Instructions When Having a Stroke - Get to a hospital without delay following the onset of symptoms. Treatment is time dependent. A clot-busting medication can be given to clear the clot if you are at the hospital within 3-4.5 hours of onset. Call 911 - don’t wait for relatives to arrive, do not wait while you pack clothing or wait for your family to return a call – leave a message. TIME IS BRAIN. Every minute you delay medical attention more brain tissue is being damaged.
What to Expect When the Ambulance Arrives - The Paramedics and EMTs focus on: making sure vital signs are stable and transporting patient quickly and efficiently to a stroke center capable of treating patient.
EMS may encourage patient to go to a hospital classified as Stroke Centers of different levels. Comprehensive stroke centers (usually larger teaching hospitals) are capable of not only giving clot-busting medication but are also able to perform procedures quickly to remove the clot and restore blood flow.
Once stable, your doctor will treat your risk factors. Recommendations will be suggested for heart-healthy lifestyle changes.

Your Storage Finder - As the population in America continues to age, we see an increasing focus on "aging in place," or continuing to live at home through the golden years. As more and more seniors indicate their desire to stay home while aging, those who are caring for them are faced with the question of how to keep them there safely. When a senior is newly diagnosed with a disability, that question demands the introduction of home modifications alongside the re-evaluation of daily activities and organization. The guide, Home Organization for Seniors with Disabilities and the Newly Disabled, will be helpful for caregivers to understand what they can do to accommodate their loved one’s disabilities.
