In the summer of 2004 my father was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma Cancer. He told his doctor about pain in his ribs. His doctor hospitalized Dad and started running tests. Even after all his treatments, his doctors assured my dad and his family his cancer would go into remission and he could have another 10 good years. How wrong they were. What the cancer doesn’t destroy, all the side effects from the treatments and medications did. He was sick the majority of the time.
Aside from a few hospital stays, he was able to stay home most of the summer but by November he never saw his home again. He spent the rest of his life between University of Michigan hospital and rehab facilities. He went from 154 to 120 pounds. My mother was my father’s rock. They were deeply devoted couple married 60 years. My mother visited my dad every day. Overall, my father maintained a wonderful sense of humor so we were able continue laughing throughout his remaining life. Sometimes he lifted my mother’s spirits when she was sad.
My parents were the inspiration and guidance for, Designated Caregiver. In addition to writing a practical, easy to follow informative manual, my book also contains antidotes, photos, and a resource section.
