CHAPTER  13 – SANDWICH  GENERATION

Dan works ten-hour days as a purchasing agent for an automotive company and travels several days a month while Marilyn, a self-employed seamstress, works flexible hours. Sixteen-year-old son, Justin, runs track and participates on the school debate team. Thirteen-year-old daughter, Clarissa, is active in the drama club. Dan’s parents work full-time, and live about 300 miles away. They visit his parents about every two months for a weekend. Marilyn’s parents live within a few miles, her mother, a homemaker and her father, on medical retirement. Marilyn visits several days a week. She has to pay medical and insurance bills, call insurance companies, medical health facilities and follow-up on prescriptions that were not processed correctly. She also takes them both to their appointments, and helps with miscellaneous activities. Every day she watches over her parents, cares for her children, fulfills her homemaker obligations, completes the responsibilities required for her career, sets aside time for herself, and makes it a priority to maintain a healthy marriage.
