CHAPTER 10 – TAKING CARE OF THE CAREGIVER

Caregivers, you deserve recognition for your tremendous contribution to families and society. You are the silent heroes and heroines. If you are emotionally and physically spent, then you will not be completely effective with your loved one. In order to give effectual care, you must take care of yourself. All too often, care providers ignore their own needs. This may work on a short-term basis but it will not last for the long haul. The caregiver may become ill, depressed and/or burnt out. In order to head off medical problems, to maintain self-esteem and have more consistent energy to assist with caregiving responsibilities, set aside special time each day to take care of basic needs. When your needs are met, your loved one, will also benefit.
