CHAPTER – 1 – HOSPITAL STAY
Juliana called her father during their usual afternoon chat time. When she spoke to him, he sounded like he was gasping for air. Juliana asked, “Dad, what’s wrong?” “Honey, havin’ trouble breathin’. Just happened.”
Before her father had the opportunity to resist, Juliana told him she was calling 911. She hung up, called 911, and then drove directly to her father’s condo. When she got to her father’s place, he was sitting in his recliner holding his chest. EMS arrived a few minutes later. They checked him over, told Juliana and her father they suspected a heart attack and transferred him by ambulance to the hospital. After an evaluation by the medical staff, her father was admitted and the diagnosis for a heart attack confirmed. Juliana did not have his medical information or any other documentation. The admission representative told her to bring it the next day. Neither, Juliana or her father had ever been admitted to the hospital. They knew very little about ‘the system’ and felt like they just enter a foreign country.
