CHAPTER 5 – PREPARING FOR MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS
After a medical appointment, Mona filed the receipt in her mother’s file drawer. In the med folder, she found an electrical and telephone bill. Then Mona checked other folders and her mother repeated the same pattern. She never wanted to get involved because she thought her mother had her system under control.
“Mother, I noticed you mixed your medical with a utility and phone bill. How do you follow-up on a problem when they are mixed?”
“Mona, I don’t. See that pile over on the table. Those papers need to go somewhere – I don’t know where. So they stay on the table.”
“Mom, I was reading about a plan called Personal Health Records. That’s how people keep track of their health related needs along with legal and other documents. With the looks of your system, we need to look into this plan.”
“We? I’m not doing it but please help me with it.”
“I’ll need your signature when I request medical records.”
“Fine with me. I can’t do it alone – at all.”
Mona’s mother realized she needed a change with her filing system and gave her daughter permission to set up a Personal Health Record. Mona knew she would not be able to complete her mother’s entire system at once but decided the health records were the first step in the process.
